Doctor's Pay Cut Calculator
Doctors of all grades have suffered a substantial pay cut since 2008 as the pay awarded by the Doctors & Dentist pay review board (DDPRB) has failed to keep up with inflation as measured using both RPI and CPIH. This is in contrast to pay in the wider economy as a whole. However, for postgraduate doctors in training based in England pay comparisons are difficult due to the replacement of the 2002 junior doctor contract with the 2016 contract which altered how pay is calculated. This contract reduced the reliance on banding by substantially increasing basic pay. This makes direct comparisons between basic pay across the years and between the two contracts misleading.
Two solutions to this problem are avaliable. The first is to base comparisons off the data collected by NHS Digital's Staff Earnings Estimates. This takes into account the extent to which banding was making up a significant proportion of 'junior' doctor's pay prior to the 2016 contract. These comparisons can be found here.
The second is to make comparisons that account for the banding used in 2002 contract which made up a large proportion total pay prior to the introduction of the 2016 contract. These comparisons can be found here.
